Facebook has launched Neighborhoods, a new addition inside the main app that provides many of the same features as Nextdoor.

The neighborhood is an app inside an app that allows users to communicate outside of the news stream. It is currently available in Canada and will be available in the United States soon.

Users may make a separate Neighborhoods profile from their main profile. They will then participate in discussion groups with other users from the same neighborhood.

The neighborhood is an extension of what Facebook users already do, such as to communicate with people they meet in real life, help local businesses, and share suggestions. It enhances the user experience by allowing them to interact with a larger community of locals with whom they are not personally acquainted.

More information about how Neighborhoods works and what users can do about it can be found here.

What is Facebook Neighborhoods, and how does it work?

The Facebook app has a segment called Neighborhoods that are dedicated to a user’s neighborhood. Users can join by developing a Neighborhoods profile that is separate from their main profile.

A user’s name, profile photo, and cover photo will be pulled from their Facebook profile through their Neighborhoods profile. Users may also have personal interests, favorite locations, and a brief bio.

Facebook can ask users to verify their address in order to ensure that they live where they say they do. In addition to their own neighborhood, users can enter neighboring communities.

Getting to Know The Neighbors

Users may participate in conversations with their neighbors or start their own by creating a post after entering a neighborhood.

A dedicated Neighborhood Questions feed allows users to respond to questions submitted by their neighbors, making it a great resource for people who are new to the area.

Users can build and enter groups inside Neighborhoods to interact with locals around specific topics if interacting with neighbors in a sub-section of Facebook isn’t exclusive enough.

Neighborhood Associations

Users who are members of a neighborhood will build and enter groups that are only open to residents of that neighborhood. This can be a good way for people to meet someone who shares their interests. When limits are relaxed, Neighborhood Groups may be used to coordinate projects and perhaps even organize gatherings.

Local Facebook groups can be imported into Neighborhoods so that more people can discover and enter them. They can then continue to build on the community they’ve already built.

Recommendations and Locations

Users can recommend places and businesses to their neighbors using the Recommendations feature.Users seeking local advice on a particular topic may create polls for other people in their area to vote on.

Neighborhood-Related Notes

Facebook employees moderate neighborhoods in order to keep them healthy and inclusive. Posts that violate the Neighborhoods Guidelines and Facebook Community Standards can be removed by moderators.

Facebook says that a user’s behavior on Neighborhoods can be used to personalize their experience through the platform, including the advertising they see.

As a result, this is a smart way for Facebook to continue collecting data on users while also allowing them to stay in the app longer so they won’t have to launch a new app like Nextdoor.

Since Apple’s iOS 14.5 update makes it harder for businesses to monitor users through several applications, it’s likely we’ll see more of this from Facebook.

At the moment, Neighborhoods is only available to Canadian users, with intentions to expand to a few US cities in the near future.
