A confirmation has been made by Google that on June 23, 2021, it’s has released a search “spam update.” The update began and completed on a single day, June 23rd. Google didn’t say exactly what sort of spam it targeted with this update, however, linked to its general spam prevention notices. Part two of the spam update was released on June 28th. Google said on Twitter “as a part of our regular work to further improve results, we have released a spam update to our systems.” Google added, “This spam update will be concluded today.”

Up until now, it doesn’t seem like this update hugely affected the areas I track. Indeed, there were higher than usual fluctuations with the majority of the tracking tools as well as more chatter, yet Google announced it, so that consistently fires things up. It is indistinct and unclear, what kind of spam this specifically targeted, I will watch to check whether I discover any clues over the upcoming days.

Google added that a “second one will follow one week from now.” So, Google will be releasing another “spam update” after one week from now, and will tell us when that is released on Twitter. Part two was released on June 28th.

SEO Community Chatter

The Black Hat World forums, which is a public and open black hat SEO forum, has next to no chatter right now on this update. WebmasterWorld (I am certain they will change the thread URL sooner or later) has some chat yet it’s anything but enormous at the present time. Remember, the update ran yesterday, and yesterday only. So, you would see the changes throughout the day/night and then today.

Tracking Tools

The tracking tools are showing volatility, yet not outrageous volatility, here is the thing that they show earlier today:

Sistrix regularly adopts a different strategy and showcases how individual websites that got hit, the amount it hit them visibility-wise. However, they said the effect was “not huge” yet, as I’ve been saying above. Yet, perhaps that will change tomorrow?

BrightLocal – which tracks the local pack results showed a major change – however I don’t think this update impacted local results:

In the event that we have any updates on this, I will tell you.

There will be another spam update at some point, after one week from now too, so stay tuned…
